A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. There were two world title fights over the weekend — Janibek Alimkhanuly’s ninth-round knockout of Andrei Mikhailovich to retain the IBF middleweight belt on Friday and Nick Ball’s 10th-round knockout of Ronny Rios to retain WBA featherweight title on Saturday. There is also plenty of news of the week and a look back on the anniversary of two major fights I covered at ringside.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Recap of Alimkhanuly’s one-sided beat down of Mikhailovich in a mandatory bout in Sydney, Australia, and what could be next for him.
Recap of Ball’s entertaining but one-sided stoppage of Rios in a Liverpool, England, homecoming defense, and what might be next for him.
I am in my 25th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and also support independent journalism.
Matchroom Boxing’s announcement that IBF junior welterweight titlist Liam Paro will make his first defense against mandatory challenger Richardson Hitchins on Dec. 7 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
There has been much confusion among fans on how they can watch the Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol fight and its undercard. A full explanation.
The mandatory rematch between WBO featherweight titlist Rafael Espinoza and former titleholder Robeisy Ramirez is set for a purse bid on Friday.
Announcement that light heavyweight contender Anthony Yarde will be back in action on Oct. 19 in the Adam Azim-Ohara Davies co-feature.
Ringside memories on the 17th anniversary of when Manny Pacquiao outpointed fellow great Marco Antonio Barrera in their junior lightweight rematch.
Ringside memories on the third anniversary of when Tyson Fury knocked out Deontay Wilder in the 11th round to retain the lineal/WBC heavyweight title in their epic third fight, the best heavyweight title fight I have ever covered.
