A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. At last there were fights cards of note over the weekend and we recapped and discussed them, including Naoya Inoue’s knockout of Ye Joon Kim and the Matchroom Boxing card headlined by Diego Pacheco’s lopsided decision over Steven Nelson. We also discussed several news items of the week and recalled notable fights on their anniversary.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Recap of Inoue’s one-punch fourth-round knockout of Kim to retain the undisputed junior featherweight title on Friday in Tokyo: the fight, the KO, the future plans.
Recap of super middleweight contender Pacheco’s hard-fought but one-sided decision over Nelson on Saturday in Las Vegas, plus thoughts on the two top undercard bouts: lightweight Andy Cruz’s rout of Omar Salcido and junior welterweight Ernesto “Tito” Mercado’s fourth-round destruction of the faded former two-division titlist Jose Pedraza.
Recap of Dalton Smith’s impressive first-round knockout of Walid Ouizza to win the vacant European title in the main event of another Matchroom Boxing card on Saturday in Nottingham, England.
I am in my 26th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and support independent journalism.
Announcement of the site and undercard for the Chris Eubank Jr.-Conor Benn fight on April 26.
Plans for an IBF interim lightweight title bout between Zaur Abdullaev and Raymond Muratalla with Vasiliy Lomachenko sidelined by a back injury.
Former unified lightweight champion George Kambosos’ planned return and the opponent he likely will face when he moves up to junior welterweight on March 22 in Sydney, Australia.
Announcement that popular Irish featherweight Michael Conlan has signed with Wasserman Boxing and is making a comeback on March 7.
Ringside memories on the 22nd anniversary of when Vernon Forrest shockingly dropped then-pound-for-pound king Shane Mosley twice and won a lopsided decision to hand him first loss and claim the lineal/WBC welterweight title in a huge upset.
Ringside memories on the 24th anniversary of when most of the heavily-hyped 2000 U.S. Olympic team turned pro on an HBO card but only Jermain Taylor would go on to make an impact as the undisputed middleweight champion. Bonus story about the first time I met the late, great Pernell Whitaker on the day of the show.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
