A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. It was a light boxing weekend with just one notable card, Golden Boy’s show on DAZN headlined by unbeaten lightweight contender William Zepeda’s second-round destruction of Jaime Arboleda. We recapped the fight, the co-feature and assessed where Zepeda fits in a deep 135-pound division. We also discussed some news items of the week and reflected on two significant heavyweight anniversaries.
Here’s what we discussed on this episode (in order):
Full recap of Zepeda mowing down Arboleda with a nasty body attack that caused three knockdowns in the KO win.
Featherweight Victor Morales’s impressive second-round upset knockout of Diego De La Hoya in the co-feature.
The announcement that Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions has struck a deal with DAZN for four Friday night events in 2023 and why this is a good thing.
Heavyweight up-and-comer Jared Anderson set to fight fellow undefeated Zhan Kossobutskiy on July 1 in Anderson’s first main event and first pro bout in his hometown of Toledo, Ohio.
A look back on the 23rd anniversary of then-heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis’ crushing second-round knockout of top contender Michael Grant in a tremendously significant fight to me because it was my first fight at ringside after being hired as the boxing writer at USA Today.
Memories on the sixth anniversary of the epic 2017 fight of the year before 90,000 at Wembley Stadium in London, where then-unified heavyweight titlist Anthony Joshua knocked out former champion Wladimir Klitschko and sent him into retirement to culminate one of the great fight weeks and fights I have ever been ringside for.
A look ahead to Canelo Alvarez’s return against John Ryder this coming Saturday.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
We will be bringing you the weekend recap each Monday. Let me know what you think of the podcast by leaving your comments.
