There’s not much boxing this weekend, which is anchored by the one fight of note, which is undisputed middleweight champion and women’s pound-for-pound No. 1 Claressa Shields defending against Maricela Cornejo on Saturday (DAZN) in Detroit. We previewed and discussed that fight and also covered several news items and looked back on three notable anniversaries.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Recapping the spring elementary school orchestra and band concert my son played in the other night.
Discussion of the formal announcement from the promoters and Showtime of the Errol Spence Jr.-Terence Crawford mega fight, the ticket prices, the great buzz for the fight and more.
The spiraling disaster of the Ryan Garcia-Oscar De La Hoya relationship.
The David Benavidez team making a huge offer to Canelo Alvarez for a September fight.
Previewing Shields-Cornejo: Better fight than against original opponent Hanna Gabriels? Shields bringing a significant fight to her home region and her place as P4P No. 1.
Tim Tszyu suffering a severe dog bite three weeks before his interim junior middleweight title defense against Carlos Ocampo
Formal announcement of the lightweight title eliminator between former unified champion George Kambosos Jr. and Maxi Hughes plus lightweight Keyshawn Davis, the 2022 Fight Freaks Unite prospect of the year, in the co-feature.
The WBA ordering featherweight titlist Leigh Wood’s mandatory against Otabek Kholmatov and junior welterweight titlist Rolly Romero’s mandatory against Ohara Davies and what fights they may get in the way of.
Memories on the seventh anniversary of Muhammad Ali’s death and being ringside for the epic 2016 fight of the year between Francisco Vargas and Orlando Salido the following night, which became a tribute to “The Greatest.”
Ringside memories of Miguel Cotto’s junior middleweight title victory against Yuri Foreman on a historic night before more than 30,000 as boxing returned to Yankee Stadium for the first time in 34 years.
