Welcome to the Fight Freaks Unite recap podcast coming off a weekend that had two notable cards, the Premier Boxing Champions Fox Sports pay-per-view headlined by the heavyweight fight between Andy Ruiz Jr. and Luis Ortiz on Sunday night in Los Angeles and the Saturday night Matchroom card on DAZN that featured junior bantamweight champion Juan Francisco Estrada in a hometown defense against Argi Cortes in Hermosillo, Mexico.
Here’s what we discussed on this episode (in order):
We get right into the Ruiz-Ortiz PBC main event and break down Ruiz’s victory in the WBC heavyweight eliminator, his performance as well as Ortiz’s performance. We talked about the knockdowns, Ruiz’s lack of activity and the prospect of a showdown with Deontay Wilder next year if Wilder beats Robert Helenius on Oct. 15.
Isaac Cruz’s explosive and exciting second-round destruction of Eduardo Ramirez in a WBC lightweight eliminator.
The return of three-division titleholder Abner Mares from a layoff of more than four years to fight to a disappointing draw with Miguel Flores in their lightweight fight. We talked about whether Mares should bother to continue fighting or call it a career.
A few thoughts on lightweight Edwin De Los Santos’ third-round knockout/upset of top prospect Jose Valenzuela as well as wins by junior middleweight Joey Spencer, junior featherweight contender Ra’eese Aleem and heavyweight Charles Martin.
Estrada’s much more difficult than expected decision win over Cortes in an all-action slugfest that set the stage for the third fight between Estrada and Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, which was formally announced immediately after the fight.
The awesome vacant IBF junior flyweight title bout in which Sivenathi Nontshinga beat Hector Flores by split decision in an epic fight of the year contender. It was an absolutely riveting, bloody, non-stop action battle and we discuss its place in 108-pound division history.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
We will be bringing you the weekend recap each Monday. Let me know what you think of the podcast by leaving your comments.
