Random thoughts: If Shakur can't get the unification fights, bring on Lomachenko
Taylor-Serrano best women's fight I've seen; props to Liam Smith; I love June 25 Matchroom card; Top Rank has best prospects; which is best show on a loaded May 14?
LAS VEGAS — You know what would be a massive fight a little bit down the road? Gervonta Davis vs. Shakur Stevenson at lightweight.
If that ever does happen though it is a ways off and a hard, hard fight to make. So, what could be next for Stevenson, who is coming off a sensational performance in a dominant decision over Oscar Valdez, whom he knocked down, to unify junior lightweight titles on Saturday night at the MGM Grand?
Stevenson was clear about what he wants, and it is not a move up to lightweight, at least not yet. He wants to win other two titles at 130 pounds and become the undisputed champion, even if nobody of sound mind could possibly argue that he isn’t already the No. 1 fighter in the division. But he wants the hardware. I get it and I hope he gets the opportunity. Becoming undisputed, especially in the four-belt era, is a big deal and very hard to do.
If Stevenson is to unify that means fights with two titleholders who are quite obscure and would be gargantuan underdogs: WBA titlist Roger Gutierrez, who has held the belt since January 2021 and made one defense, and IBF titlist Kenichi Ogawa, who won the vacant belt in by decision over Azinga Fuzile in November. Neither are with Top Rank, which means deals would have to be made with rival promoters. Rarely is that easy.
