Claressa Shields, the pound-for-pound No. 1 female boxer in the world, showed again just why she is so highly regarded.
Shields cruised to a dominating shutout decision over Maricela Cornejo, the No. 1 contender in three of the sanctioning organizations, to retain the undisputed women’s middleweight title on Saturday night in the main event of a Salita Promotions card on DAZN at Little Caesars Arena, which hosted a boxing event for the first time, in Detroit.
Shields is from nearby Flint, Michigan, and drew a raucous crowd of 11,784 to watch her alternate between pounding on Maricela with right hands that could barely miss and outboxing her with ease.
Judges Waleska Roldan and Robin Taylor scored the fight 100-90 and judge John Basile had it 100-89, giving Shields a 10-8 round in the seventh despite there being no knockdown. That is how dominating Shields was as she made her sixth overall middleweight title defense.
