Aidos Yerbossynuly, who suffered a traumatic brain injury in a recent world title bout, has been weaned from a medically induced coma, moved out of intensive care and into a regular hospital room and is improving, sources with knowledge of his condition told Fight Freaks Unite.

Yerbossynuly challenged WBA “regular” super middleweight titleholder David Morrell in the main event of a Showtime-televised Premier Boxing Champions card on Nov. 5 and he took tremendous punishment in the one-sided fight before being dropped in the 12th round and brutally knocked out later in the final round at The Armory in Minneapolis, Morrell’s adopted hometown.

Yerbossynuly rose from the knockout and was helped to his corner by Morrell and referee Tony Weeks, where he received immediate medical attention.

He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was placed into a medically induced coma and underwent surgery to relieve swelling of his brain, sources said at the time.

Nearly two weeks later, he has shown enormous improvement, according to sources. One source said Yerbossynuly was able to speak and another said he had been able to walk to some degree.

While representatives from TGB Promotions, which promoted the card, and PBC have not acknowledged Yerbossonynuly’s specific injury, the coma or surgery, they did offer Fight Freaks Unite a joint statement the night after the fight.

“Representatives of TGB Promotions and PBC are on the ground in Minneapolis with Aidos’ team and we are monitoring the situation closely,” they said in the statement. “Out of respect for he and his family’s privacy, we can’t share any details but we ask the boxing community to keep him in its thoughts and prayers.”

Showtime, which reported near the end of its telecast that Yerbossynuly had been taken to the hospital, said in a statement given to Fight Freaks Unite at the time, “We continue to monitor the situation with Aidos Yerbossynuly and our thoughts are with him and his loved ones at this time.”

According to a source, TGB Promotions and PBC still have a representative in Minneapolis to assist Yerbossonynuly’s team and they were also to bring members of his family from Kazakhstan to Minneapolis to be with him.

Morrell (8-0, 7 KOs), 24, who was making his fourth title defense, dominated the entire fight. He battered and bloodied Yerbossynuly (16-1, 11 KOs), 30, of Kazakhstan, and led 110-99 on two scorecards and was up 108-101 on the third before knocking him out with 26 seconds remaining in the fight.

Yerbossynuly, a professional since 2015, was boxing in the United States for the third time. He had knocked out Lennox Allen in his previous fight in September 2021 to become the mandatory challenger for Morrell’s second-tier 168-pound world title and came to the Cuba native’s adopted hometown to challenge him for the belt.
