A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
LAS VEGAS — I was last here in April to cover Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia, a huge event, and I’m happy to be back this week for Errol Spence Jr.-Terence Crawford for the undisputed welterweight title in what I strongly view as the most significant fight of the year and a potential classic when they meet on Saturday (Showtime PPV and PPV.com, 8 p.m. ET, $84.99) at T-Mobile Arena.
This week is a little different than others because for the first time since T-Mobile opened the MGM Grand is not the main base for the fight or where I am staying or the location of the media center. The “grand arrivals” and undercard public workout took place at the MGM Grand but inside T-Mobile Arena is site of the press conference and weigh-in and the media center is a tent (yes, air conditioned) behind the arena. The closest hotel to the media center and arena is the Park MGM, which is where media is staying as it is right across the street and a short walk (in the 100-plus degree temperature!).
I arrived on Wednesday morning and because I have covered so many fights in Las Vegas, there is a certain rhythm and routine once I hit town even though it was slightly thrown off because of the different setup this week. I don’t ever take it for granted that I get to cover these events and I wish every fan could get a chance to see what I do and get to go where I can during fight week.
So, I thought I’d show you a little bit of where I went and what I saw on Wednesday with a series of photos and an explanation of it all.
