LAS VEGAS — Gervonta “Tank” Davis’ ring walk began with the song “Ghostbusters,” a play on challenger Frank Martin’s nickname being “The Ghost.” Eight rounds later, Davis busted him and did so in violent fashion.
Davis scored a huge eighth-round knockout to retain the WBA lightweight title for the fifth time on Saturday night in the main event of a PBC on Prime Video pay-per-view that was the milestone 100th championship boxing event inside the famed MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Before referee Harvey Dock had even finished counting Martin out, Davis had climbed the corner post, shimmied his hips and prepared for a giant back flip as the pro-Davis crowd of 13,249 went wild.
It was an electrifying finish to a competitive fight, but as usual, Davis’ power was the difference.
I am in my 25th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription to read the rest of this post and for full access to all posts and comments — and also support independent journalism.
