Matchroom signs Gongora
Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn on Monday announced he has signed super middleweight Carlos Gongora (19-0 14 KOs), 31, a two-time Olympian from Ecuador. Gongora made a big impression when he scored an upset 12th-round knockout to end an all-action fight against Ali Akhmedov on the Gennadiy Golovkin-Kamil Szeremeta undercard on Dec. 18 in Hollywood, Florida.
“I want to thank Eddie Hearn and Matchroom for giving me the opportunity to shine,” Gongora said. “I want to thank my manager Mike Criscio for believing in me and pushing to get me in the best position possible. I proved to the world I have what it takes to be a champion with only two weeks of training. I will not stop until I have all the belts. I want to fight the best and only the best. I want to support my family and give them a great life, one they never had before.”
Said Hearn: “His win over Akhmedov in an all-action fight was one of the most dramatic I’ve seen, and I believe the division stood up and took notice of Carlos’ name that night. His team say that Carlos will take on anyone, and I believe that we can make some huge fights for Carlos to chase his dream of holding all the belts.”
