Tim Tszyu obliterated Carlos Ocampo in 77 seconds to retain the WBO interim junior middleweight title on Sunday afternoon at Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in Broadbeach, Australia.
The victory, in a fight that aired live on Showtime on Saturday night in the Untied States, kept Tszyu on course for a long overdue mandatory shot this fall against undisputed world champion Jermell Charlo.
Tszyu showed no ill effects from an unusual pre-fight injury suffered three weeks ago when he was at a social gathering and was bitten by a pill bull on his right forearm so severely that he needed surgery and 26 stitches to close the wound. But Tszyu was back in training camp a couple of days later, had the stitches out about a week after that and insisted all along that he was going to fight.
“You know what? I had a lot of different adversities going into this fight, so for me it was more about just getting through it, pushing through,” Tszyu said. “I didn’t think it would be that early because this guy is a warrior, but again, it’s Tim Tszyu here.”
