Vergil Ortiz-Jaron Ennis dead for now as Golden Boy wins court ruling
Judge orders arbitration, which will delay hope of fight happening for at least several months and likely send Ennis looking elsewhere
A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
Perhaps someday the much-anticipated fight between top junior middleweights Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Jaron “Boots” Ennis will be made but any hope of it being finalized for the spring are dead.
That is because Golden Boy Promotions, Ortiz’s promoter, won a legal victory in United States District Court in Nevada on Monday night as Judge Cristina D. Silva issued an eight-page ruling, a copy of which was obtained by Fight Freaks Unite, in which she granted Oscar De La Hoya’s promotional company interim injunctive relief preventing, at least for now, Ortiz from contracting for the Ennis fight that was initially in the works for March 28 and then April 18 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Silva further ordered Ortiz and Golden Boy to settle the case at arbitration, a process that likely will take months and send Ennis and his promoter, Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, looking for another fight rather than waiting for the outcome of the case.
