It had been 2½ years since Leigh Wood dealt fellow two-time featherweight titlist and British countryman Josh Warrington a knockout loss and in the long awaited rematch he proved once again to be the better man on Saturday in the headliner of a Matchroom Boxing card on DAZN.
In what amounted to a loser-goes-home rematch, Wood handily outpointed the game Warrington in their nontitle but high-profile junior lightweight sequel before a sold-out crowd of some 8,000 at Motorpoint Arena in Wood’s hometown of Nottingham, England.
Wood won 119-110, 119-110 and 117-111 in a crisp performance that ranks as one of his best in years and likely sent Warrington into retirement.
“Very sweet,” Wood said of the victory. “I worked hard for this, my team worked hard. Sacrificed a lot.”
Then he addressed his loyal fans: “Enjoy tonight, I will!”
