Leigh Wood is no stranger to drama in the ring.
There was his knockout with 17 seconds left in the 12th round against Can Xu in 2021 to win the WBA featherweight title. And then, trailing on all three scorecards in his next fight, there was a shocking 12th-round knockout of Michael Conlan, whom he ejected from the ring for the 2022 KO of the year in one of the best fights of the year.
And now he has another memorable chapter to add to his story: a rousing come-from-behind seventh-round knockout of British countryman Josh Warrington to retain the WBA title in the all-action main event of a Matchroom Boxing card on DAZN on Saturday at Utilita Arena in Sheffield, England.
“I thought Josh Warrington was sensational,” Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn said. “I had him well ahead in the fight. I actually said to (DAZN pundit) Tony Bellew before the stoppage, ‘I think Leigh Wood’s done. The weight’s hurting him.’ And it was just a thrilling knockout.”
