Puerto Rican junior middleweight up-and-comer Xander Zayas may not have gotten the knockout inside six rounds that he predicted but he beat up and all but shut out former WBO world titlist Patrick Teixeira for the biggest win of his career on Saturday night.
And Zayas, who was in his first main event, got the victory on the Top Rank Boxing on ESPN card at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York, on the eve of the city’s annual Puerto Rican Day parade, a big spot for a Puerto Rican boxer.
He won 100-90, 100-90 and 99-91 as he tattooed Teixeira, his first southpaw opponent, with right hands and body shots throughout the bout. Fight Freaks Unite also had it 100-90 for the 21-year-old Zayas, who went past eight rounds for the first time.
Zayas showed respect for Teixeira and took in the big moment of winning as the headliner on the all-important Puerto Rican date.
