Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez, with his trademark black cowboy hat on his head and a big smile on his face, was understandably quite pleased with the performance he had just turned in on Saturday night.
“I’m back. ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez is back,” he declared.
Indeed, Ramirez turned in a strong performance in a unanimous decision victory over Joe Smith Jr., winning their WBA cruiserweight title eliminator for the No. 2 position by surprisingly wide scores of 99-91 on all three scorecards in the Golden Boy Promotions main event on DAZN at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.
“This is a new beginning for me,” Ramirez said. “I came back stronger, faster and I came forward. I was a lot smarter in the ring. I think it was a great performance for me. I don’t have anything to say except thank you, Joe Smith. I think he’s a great fighter and tough opponent. I wish him nothing but the best. We had to take care of business in the ring but out of the ring we can be friends.”
