Haney looked better outside the ring; Garcia looked better inside it - much better. I didn't buy the PPV, but saw replays. I'll never buy a Haney fight, his holding is disgusting and should have cost him several points, if not a DQ. Dan, what is your view on holding? Wouldn't boxing be a better sport if the rules were strictly enforced?
Thank you. Holding is out of control. And it sure looked like Dock was biased against Garcia. Sad part is, the boxing media never pressures athletic commissions or promoters on holding.
It was an entertaining fight; however, with all the clinching, at times I thought I was watching WWE. I’d like to see a rematch, but actually at 140 for both fighters. If not, let’s see Garcia go to 147 and fight Boots.
It's wild to me that Garcia didn't properly train for this fight and was drinking in camp, and then just walks in there and wins, with three KDs to boot. This sport!
That’s sports man. Usually the more talented guy (or team) wins. Coaching and training is massively overrated, because journalists and fans can relate to coaches & trainers, but can’t relate to ultra-talented people (like top athletes)
Hear me out... Ryan garcia vs Adrien Broner. It would be like two 18 wheelers hitting eachother at 100mph. Everyone would be rubber necking. Put it in the sphere in vegas and during the fight put their social media posts about eachother on the display.
I thought Garcia looked a little doughy for an elite fighter. He didn’t seem to have done the conditioning required and I think it cost him the KO. he didn’t seem to have the gas to finish Devin Haney, which he had several opportunities to do.
Every time he got aggressive and put shots together good things happened for him. Every time he let Haney take the lead he wound up in the corner with his back turned. I hate the “turn his back thing” looks very amateurish. That is not the shoulder roll.
Give Derrick James major credit. And with Tank vs Frank coming up in June, if Frank pulls off the upset, we're talking about him as Trainer of the Year award, again.
You see how fickle these awards can be? Spence kicked him to the curb and everyone was saying he's overrated bc of the Charlo performance against Canelo.
But the mark of a true trainer is getting the most out of your fighter, having him well prepared, coming up with a solid game plan and letting the chips fall wherever. How many trainers has Ryan had already? His Dad, Reynoso, Goosen... give James his props!
Boy were journalists and bubble-residing boxing fans wrong on this one. W-R-O-N-G wrong
Kate Abdo embarrassed herself on the pre-show. Chris Algieri looks like an absolute fool for his comments on his PPV.com-funded podcast
I have to give you credit, Dan. Yes, you covered Garcia’s so-called antics from a tunnel-visioned, “mainstream media”, point of view, but I didn’t see you imply that the fight should be cancelled or that Garcia would meltdown once he got in the ring. Well done
He actually kinda did, though. I love Dan, but he said the fight shouldn't be happening bc of Ryan's mental state, etc. and that Haney would "hurt" Ryan.
Oh did he? I only get the newsletter, and I don't recall him saying that there. Dan blocked me on X for making a snide comment about PBC burning through their investors' money. If he said it there, I missed it
Garcia and Derrick James had the perfect fight plan. Controlled aggression in bursts, then get on your bike and recover. Every time he got aggressive he overwhelmed Haney and hurt him.
Idk about that. I thought Haney won most rounds. If he didn’t get caught sleeping in the 1st it might be a different fight. I think Haney underperformed big time. Also Ryan missing weight matters, at the highest level the margins are so slim. Would like to see a rematch at 147.
If Spinks-Tyson would’ve gone the distance, Spinks would’ve won plenty of rounds. Today’s officiating is very different. Spinks would’ve been DQ’d many times over for holding the way Haney did
Entertaining fight but looked little more, to an outsider, than a sloppy domestic level fight. Neither of these guys are the "future/face of boxing" or whatever overused hyperbole could be applied. I would pick Jack Catterall to beat both at 140, but he doesn't have a social media presence or loudmouth father so...
Insane build up, insane fight, insane result.
Well said.
Did Garcia have us all fooled? Is Haney that bad? Did missing the weight simply give Garcia too much of an advantage? So many questions..
We definitely need a rematch to get the answers!
For now looks like Garcia proved everybody wrong, guess he can win a big fight while living recklessly
Can’t see a rematch at 140, but definitely. Massive fight.
I would be surprised to see a rematch any time soon. This was a Crawford-Spence level beatdown; arguably worse. Two different classes of fighters

Boy, was I wrong. Sheesh!

Great fight. We got our moneys worth!
Dan, can you talk about how you scored the fight for Haney on Twitter? Do you really believe Haney won the fight ?

Even so it was a crazy entertaining fight and Haney is a gritty dude to make it through that.

In an odd way, this reminded me of when Vernon forest surprised everybody and routed Shane Mosley in their first fight.🥊

Yes it was on X that me made that comment.
Ah hah. Thank you. I guess I need a burner account...

And, Garcia is worlds better than Haney. This was the modern era’s Tyson-Spinks

Does anyone know what weight both fighters walked into the ring at?
