A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
The new year is upon us and the boxing schedule is finally ramping up, so here is what I want in 2025:
If Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford happens this fall as seems likely, that it lives up to the crazy hype it will receive.
It should have happened years ago, and it’s not nearly as meaningful now as it should have been, but Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua.
But, if Fury is indeed retired — and few believe he really is — I hope he enjoys it.
For the Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol rematch to have a bit more action than the first fight.
The immediate abolition of interim titles — unless the champion is injured and sidelined for a protracted period of time. That’s the only time it makes sense.
Junto Nakatai vs. Bam Rodriguez. I’d consider sacrificing a finger or toe for it.
Naoya Inoue vs. the Rodriguez-Nakatani dream fight winner.
For the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association, the drug-testing gold standard, to handle every major fight. Period. And for much harsher penalties doled out by state commissions when there is a positive test.
I will be in Las Vegas this week covering Benavidez-Morrell. Please upgrade to a paid subscription and make sure you don’t miss any coverage. You’ll also have full access to all posts, the full archive, and you can make and read comments — and you will help support independent journalism.
