Canelo surprised by Reynoso cruiserweight request; Thurman-Barrios to headline PPV; Stanionis clears path for Spence-Ugas unification; Quick hits; Show and tell
Come on - I don't believe for a minute that Reynoso hadn't spoke to Canelo about fighting Makabu at cruiserweight.
Nor do I believe that Makabu was chosen as a possible opponent for no reason - he sure wasn't chosen because he's the best crusierweight.
Canelo would beat every one of Makabu's recent opponents who have been poor and clearly built their records by fighting at lower levels - even so Makabu still laboured to wins over Cieslak and especially Papin - a split decision against an 11 fight relative novice.
If Canelo wants to take on the biggest challenges in the sport as he keeps on telling the boxing media then he's going the wrong way about it.
Assuming that Golovkin is too old now then Andrade is the most awkward opponent for him at 160lbs , Beterbiev is regarded as the best 175 pounder and Briedis (or Okolie?) is regarded as the best cruiserweight.
The choice of Makabu or Mchunu is the easiest route for Canelo to become a 5-weight world champion.
If you believe that Canelo had no conversations with Reynoso in the plan to do this then you'll believe anything - you'll believe that Canelo doesn't really know what motherf*cker means.
If it was so easy, everyone (including Beterbiev) would’ve tried it all ready. Hell, at one point writers like Steve Kim were blowing up GGG. By saying he had Light Heavyweight power. Yet, he has more Welters (they’re multiple) than Super MW’s or Light HW’s (ZERO) on his fluffy resume.
Nobody said it was easy - but taking on long past their best fighters like Kovalev and Makabu is not taking the "biggest challenges".
Although not easy it's certainly easier to become a multi-weight world champion these days, with 4 sanctioning bodies, than in the past.
Canelo keeps telling the boxing media that he wants the "biggest challenges" then he should be taking on the likes of Beterbiev and Briedis - they are the biggest challenges at light heavyweight and cruiserweight.
In the same way that Ray Leonard & Tommy Hearns took on the very best in Marvin Hagler rather than waiting for him to retire and taking on a lesser champion such as Juan Roldan or Mustafa Hamsho.
Golovkin never had any ambition to rise in weight, he's been a career-long middleweight, and so I've no idea why you think he is relevant to Canelo flouncing about the weight divisions picking up alphabet titles just to call himself a 5-weight world champion.
I’m just bringing up recent “Bogeymen” that Canelo and everyone else were supposedly avoiding. Either way, again. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it. Cheers.
Maybe more fighters might try to do what Canelo has done if they were a favourite of the president of their sanctioning body too.
Most fighters have to get into a mandatory position in a higher division before challenging the champion.
The WBO has a rule that allows a champ at a division below to fight the champ at the weight above but this is usually not the case with any of the other sanctioning bodies. However Canelo is Sulaiman's favourite and is allowed to more or less do what the hell he likes.
IMO if Canelo had used his win over an old and past it Kovalev to set up a unification with Beterbiev he would have avoided nearly all the criticism he's taken for using the easier (but not easy) routes to becoming a 5-weight world champion - something he's clearly more interested in than taking on the "biggest challenges" in the higher divisions.
That said, Beterbiev is 37 on Jan 21st and Briedis is 37 on Jan 13th and so it'll probably not be too long before they're both past their best - maybe he'll be happy to fight them then(?).

You can believe Cinnamon Boys CW attempt will be fought at less than 200 lb limit....you know for his legacy 🙄
