Also Dan, thanks for posting the scorecards!

GGG is much slower than he was 4 years ago and Canelo Alvarez just simply fought a smart tactical fight. But perhaps at 32 years old and after 50 plus fights maybe Alvarez is starting to slow down too. The punch output was very economical on both guys.

Canelo is even a better businessman than he is a boxer. Fought GGG when he was way past his best was a crafty business move. That was easy money for him.

Don't forget, GGG was past his prime when they fought the first time in 2017, let alone now. The last time we saw a prime GGG was the fight before Jacobs, against Kell Brook in 2016. That should put a little perspective on just how good GGG really was.

And he still scored 2-1.

Onto another topic:

What do you see say to a decider between AJ and Ruiz?

GGG isn’t anybody’s “easy money”.

I think GGG maybe had about four rounds of asskick and opened it up at the end of the fight. I was really dismissive of the scores at the end. I mean, Canelo won, but the scores seemed way off, but in retrospect I could see it sorta possible to give GGG round one? And the last four. Making it a 7-5 win. I’m not saying that’s anything like the score I had. I’m just upgrading my opinion to bad scores, from criminally bad scores.

You could draw a lot of parallels between this fight, and the Bevol Álvarez fight. The smaller champion comes up in weight to challenge the bigger champ and clearly loses but not totally dominated, and walks away with a loss and his belts and rep intact. Golovkin is clearly diminished at 40, but he is so damn good and so much damn better than most everyone else that he can continue to fight mere mortals and win for another year or so I guess. Now he’s just exceptional, not immortal. Also hitting Canelo is like hitting a brick wall. Many would’ve crumbled under his late attack.

I published an article on who Canelo Alvarez could face next.

Thank you for the update. Just one edit, however. You listed the punches landed/thrown for each fight, but put the same numbers for the first bout as this one. GGG actually outlanded the ginger 218-169 in their initial encounter.

Well, they can’t all be classics, I suppose. But we did get the dude lip-syncing (badly) the Kazakh national anthem.
