Welcome to the Fight Freaks Unite recap podcast coming off a weekend that included a Showtime tripleheader and a top prospect headlining in London. Topping the PBC Showtime card was O’Shaquie Foster handing Rey Vargas his first defeat and winning the vacant WBC junior lightweight title. We recapped that card as well as junior welterweight Adam Azim’s rout of Santos Reyes on the Boxxer card. Plus we went over news items, including on Canelo Alvarez, Josh Taylor, Jack Catterall and more. We also look back on the anniversary of a huge Oscar De La Hoya fight and chat about a Hall of Fame great on his birthday.
Here’s what we discussed on this episode (in order):
Full recap and thoughts on Foster’s big and dominant victory over Vargas: How he did it, what he overcame to get there, where does it leave Vargas and what might be in store for Foster.
Next we discussed the two Showtime undercard fights: welterweight Mario Barrios battering Jovanie Santiago for eight rounds and heavyweight Lenier Pero’s eighth-round knockout of fellow up-and-comer Viktor Faust in what had been a good, competitive fight until the body-shot stoppage.
Recap and thoughts on the hot-shot prospect Azim’s 10-round shutout of Reyes in what was at least a small step up in competition and what I made of his performance.
The prospect of Canelo’s next undisputed super middleweight title defense in May coming against likely opponent John Ryder in Mexico.
The delayed rematch between junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall now likely off as Catterall is set for a March fight and Taylor, out with a foot injury, is looking to return in June against Teofimo Lopez.
The planned April return of junior welterweight titlist Alberto Puello against Rolly Romero in a Showtime main event.
Joseph Diaz Jr. vs. Mercito Gesta on the Gilberto Ramirez-Gabe Rosado March 18 undercard.
Memories of the huge fight between Hall of Famer and then-welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya and Ike Quartey, who put on a dramatic battle 24 years ago on Monday.
Memories on the 49th birthday of the Hall of Fame featherweight champion Prince Naseem Hamed.
It was Super Bowl Sunday when we taped this so we chime in how we like our chicken wings prepared and what we like on the side.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
We will be bringing you the weekend recap each Monday. Let me know what you think of the podcast by leaving your comments.
