A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. The very slow January continues. Even though we do not have a notable fight card to preview there is a ton of news, and we covered it and gave our thoughts, including on the supposed retirement of Tyson Fury and much more. We also looked back on the anniversary of two significant heavyweight fights.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Former heavyweight champion Fury announced his retirement — yet again. What do we make of it? Is it for real? Do we believe it?
Announcement that the deal is signed for Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn to fight in April — 2 1/2 years after their bout was canceled during fight week after Benn’s failed drug test became public. Details on the deal and thoughts on the fight.
The plans for a rematch between Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia following spring interim bouts and what needs to happen for the deal to be finalized.
I am in my 26th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and support independent journalism.
Turki Alalshikh, who has been busy getting fight made like Eubank-Benn, said if Fury is retired, he still wants to make Anthony Joshua against Deontay Wilder. We weighed in with strong opinions on that.
Golden Boy’s announcement that junior welterweight contender Oscar Duarte will face former two-time titlist Regis Prograis on Feb. 15.
Memories on the 26th anniversary of when Mike Tyson returned 18 months after being punished for biting Evander Holyfield to get dominated by Francois Both before scoring a crushing one-punch KO in the fifth round,
Ringside memories on the 10th anniversary of when Deontay Wilder took on a legitimate opponent for the first time and proved many naysayers wrong in a one-sided rout of Bermane Stiverne in their first fight to win the WBC heavyweight title.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
We bring you the preview each Friday and the weekend recap each Monday. Let me know what you think of the podcast by leaving your comments.
