A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
There is just one significant card this weekend and it’s a huge one, at least for the United Kingdom, where the long anticipated middleweight grudge match between bitter rivals Chris Eubank Jr. and Conor Benn will finally take place as they extend the family feud their fathers began 35 years ago with the first of their two legendary bouts. We previewed the fight and the full undercard. We also covered several notable news items of the week. And our nostalgia segments are available on the Big Fight Weekend YouTube channel, so please subscribe.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Preview of the long-anticipated feud fight between Eubank and Benn, which will happen on Saturday — 2 1/2 years after it was canceled during fight week due to Benn’s failed drug test.
Preview of the undercard, which includes middleweight Liam Smith versus Aaron McKenna, the rubber match between light heavyweights Anthony Yarde and Lyndon Arthur, former cruiserweight titlist Chris Billam-Smith against Brandon Glanton, and an all-British cruiserweight fight between Viddal Riley and Cheavon Clarke.
I am in my 26th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and support independent journalism.
My reporting on the latest on the Gervonta “Tank” Davis-Lamont Roach lightweight title rematch, which is moving off of the originally intended date.
My reporting on an agreement between Top Rank and PBC to put on WBC junior lightweight titlist O’Shaquie Foster defending against WBC featherweight titlist Steven Fulton.
The IBF officially ordering heavyweight titlist Daniel Dubois’ mandatory against Derek Chisora and why it won’t happen next.
The WBA’s absurd decision to sanction Ryan Garcia-Rolando Romero for the vacant “regular” welterweight title and the rest of what it ruled.
The plans for WBO welterweight titlist Brian Norman to defend against Japanese contender Jin Sasaki.
We have two nostalgia segments, both of which are available to watch on the YouTube channel, which I hope you will subscribe to as we will be increasing the content. First up, memories on the 24th anniversary of when Hasim Rahman pulled one of the biggest upsets of all time when he drilled Lennox Lewis in their first fight to win the heavyweight championship. Watch the video here:
Ringside memories on the 10th anniversary of when Wladimir Klitschko outpointed Bryant Jennings to retain the heavyweight championship in what turned out to be the final victory of his legendary career. Watch the video here:
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
We bring you the preview each Friday and the weekend recap each Monday. Let me know what you think of the podcast by leaving your comments.
