Podcast: Previews of Foster-Nova and Curiel-Nontshinga rematch
Plus: Taylor-Catterall II set; Canelo-Charlo speculation; more news of the week; anniversaries of two notable fights
A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
There are two notable cards coming up but both are on Friday night instead of the usual Saturday, and we discussed both: O’Shaquie Foster defending the WBC junior lightweight title against Abraham Nova in the Top Rank main event and Adrien Curiel defending the IBF junior flyweight title against Sivenathi Nontshinga in an immediate rematch in the Matchroom Boxing headliner. We also discussed several news items from the week. And in our nostalgia section, we looked back on the anniversary of two notable bouts.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Preview of Foster-Nova: How good is the match, how both arrived in this bout, and a look at the undercard, including junior lightweight Andres Cortes versus Bryan Chevalier in the co-feature and featherweight prospect Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington against Bernard Torres in the opener.
Preview of Curiel-Nontshinga II: Will it be repeat for Curiel, who drilled Nontshinga to win the title in their first fight, or will it be Nontshinga’s revenge? Plus the return of former WBA featherweight titlist Mauricio Lara in the co-feature.

Official announcement of the rematch between Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall and thoughts on the fight.
Discussion of Jermall Charlo’s Instagram video in which he downplayed that he will be the May 4 challenger for undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.
Plans for the return of heavyweight contender Jared Anderson on April 13 and the two opponents that were on Top Rank’s short list but who are no longer being considered.
Announcement that Matchroom Boxing has signed IBF junior welterweight titlist Subriel Matias.
Memories on the 46th anniversary of Leon Spinks’ massive upset of Muhammad Ali to win undisputed heavyweight title in their first fight.
Memories on the 21st anniversary of when Hall of Famer Rafael Marquez knocked out then-unbeaten Tim Austin to win the IBF bantamweight title in fight that I will always remember because after I watched it on HBO I proposed to my wife.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
We bring you the preview each Friday and the weekend recap each Monday. Let me know what you think of the podcast by leaving your comments.

I take umbrage with TJ's unnuanced take on what happened with Bronco Lara's weight, prior to the Cordina rematch. He was instructed not to bother with making weight, days before the official weigh-in by the BBBoC. And was stripped for only being 3.8 lbs above the mandated weight (mid week). The BBBoC has scammed foreign champions of the titles before. Also disqualified John Riel Casimero for use of a sauna. Some Boxers get every possible nuance added to their losses. For others it's "too bad, go kick rocks" lol
