The first weekend of 2024 kicked off with one notable boxing card, a Golden Boy show on DAZN headlined by the return of Vergil Ortiz Jr. against Fredrick Lawson. We covered the card as well as various news items and looked back at the anniversary of a highly significant Showtime card.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Recap and thoughts on Ismael Barroso’s stunning first-round demolition of Ohara Davies to win the vacant WBA interim junior welterweight title in the co-feature and what it means for both.
Recap and thoughts on the main event, Ortiz’s first-round knockout of Lawson thanks to the historically horrendous quick and unnecessary stoppage made by referee Tony Weeks. We get into the stoppage, why it was so bad, what should happen to Weeks and Ortiz’s call-out of Tim Tszyu.
We also discussed the two other bouts on the main card, junior welterweight contender Arnold Barboza Jr.’s knockout of Xolisani Ndongeni in Barboza’s first bout of his new Golden Boy contract and welterweight Raul Curiel’s knockout of Elias Diaz.

Ryan Garcia’s decision to shift from trying to make a fight with Devin Haney to Rolando Romero instead and what could be behind it.
Golden Boy’s announcement of its promotional deal with Jose Ramirez.
Memories on the 18th anniversary of a significant Don King card on Showtime on which Carlos Baldomir outpointed Zab Judah in a gargantuan upset to win the lineal/WBC welterweight title in the main event and O’Neil Bell knocked out Jean-Marc Mormeck in their first fight to unify titles and become the second-ever undisputed cruiserweight champion in a terrific fight — and why I was not ringside.
