It’s the calm before the storm of next week’s Errol Spence Jr.-Terence Crawford mega fight. The only notable card is Saturday’s Top Rank/ESPN show headlined by the IBF lightweight elimination bout between former unified champion George Kambosos Jr. and Maxi Hughes, which we previewed. There are also my questions to Spence and Crawford during their recent media availability ahead of next week’s long-awaited undisputed welterweight title fight. We also covered several news items from the week and, on its anniversary, we discussed one of the most significant rematches of the early 2000s.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Preview of Kambosos-Hughes, including what to expect from Kambosos coming off back-to-back losses to Devin Haney; who is Hughes and what to expect?
We also previewed the co-feature of lightweight prospect Keyshawn Davis taking on former European champion Francesco Patera.
My few questions for Spence and Crawford during their recent media virtual news conference. Spence gives his thoughts on the fight being compared to the famed Sugar Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns welterweight unification fight and his decision to not take a fight late last year or early this while waiting for Crawford to have an interim bout. Crawford gives his thoughts on where possibly becoming the first male boxer to be a four-belt undisputed champion would stack up compared to his other accomplishments and what it took to finally get the very difficult negotiation done.
Announcement of Top Rank’s Aug. 26 heavyweight tripleheader involving Jared Anderson, Efe Ajagba and Bakhodir Jalolov in separate bouts.
An excellent world title doubleheader set for Tokyo on Sept. 18, when unified junior flyweight champion Kenshiro Teraji and junior bantamweight titlist Junto Nakatani will both defend their belts in interesting matchups.
The rematch between Liam Smith and Chris Eubank Jr. being rescheduled for Sept. 2.
My reporting on a good-looking fight between featherweight titlist Luis Alberto Lopez and Joet Gonzalez being made to headline a Sept. 13 Top Rank card.
DAZN’s interest in making a fight between super middleweights Jaime Munguia and Edgar Berlanga, and thoughts on whether it could actually get done.
Ringside memories on the 21st anniversary of then-welterweight champion Vernon Forrest’s huge rematch with amateur and pro rival Shane Mosley.
