With rumors swirling and reports about what pound-for-pound king and undisputed super middleweight world champion Canelo Alvarez will do for his spring fight, manager and trainer Eddy Reynoso set the record straight on Thursday.
“Good afternoon,” Reynoso posted to Twitter. “I am grateful to communicate that there (are) offers for Canelo’s next fight from PBC and Matchroom. The negotiation process is still a work in progress. A final decision has not been reached. As of now, all information published (Wednesday) has no truth or foundation behind it. Once we have a signed agreement our team will be the first to notify the public.”
Reynoso was calling out an inaccurate report by ESPN that said Alvarez was “on the verge” of a deal for a third fight with rival Gennadiy Golovkin and “closing in on a two-fight deal worth upward of $85 million” to return to promoter Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing and DAZN for a May 7 fight against light heavyweight titlist Dmitry Bivol (19-0, 11 KOs) to be followed by a Sept. 17 third fight with Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs).
Four-division titleholder Alvarez would have to defeat Bivol and GGG, who would move up in weight, would have to defeat Ryota Murata in their delayed middleweight unification bout that was supposed to take place in December but now is unlikely to take place until at least April due to the Covid-19 restrictions in Japan, which is Murata’s home country and where the fight will take place.
Bivol is co-promoted by Hearn and has been fighting on DAZN and GGG is under exclusive contract to DAZN and already has defined economic terms in his contract if he is meets Alvarez again, a source with knowledge of the deal told Fight Freaks Unite.
Alvarez is 1-0-1 against Golovkin in heavily disputed middleweight title fight fights that were in 2017 and 2018.
In addition to a deal with Hearn and DAZN, Alvarez is also weighing an offer from Al Haymon of Premier Boxing Champions for a pay-per-view fight in May against middleweight titlist Jermall Charlo (32-0, 22 KOs), who would move up in weight.
After doing three fights in a row with Hearn on DAZN, Mexico’s Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KOs) worked with PBC on a one-fight deal for his last fight on Showtime PPV on Nov. 6 in Las Vegas, where he knocked out Caleb Plant in the 11th round of their four-belt unification fight to become the first-ever undisputed 168-pound world champion.
Alvarez is again a promotional and broadcast free agent.
