Sandor Martin was supposed to be a prop, just a guy on the other side of the ring for Mikey Garcia to bat around for a few rounds to get his tune-up win in following a 19-month layoff before moving on to a major fight. Everything was set up for Garcia to win the welterweight fight. He made Martin come up in weight to meet him at a catch weight of 145 pounds. Garcia’s purse was $1.5 million and Martin was thrown $150,000. When the purse disparity is that great you know who is supposed to win.
I was interested in how Mikey would look in this match after his one sided beat down from Spence and the long layoff…. Either he’s lost his skills because of age or Martin is that good…. We’ll see! Congratulations to Martin on a great victory and two of the judges for fair scoring.
Garcia looked pretty soft and fought like it was a sparring session he only sorta cared about winning. He seemed disengaged and unconcerned about the outcome. Maybe all the long layoffs have caught up with him.
Hopefully this is the end of Mikey’s Gravy Train. Congratulations to Sandor Martin. He exposed Mikey’s pudgy butt for what he really is. A Big Name that was always going to be an easy big payday for the likes of Spence, Tank, Haney, Teofimo, etc.
Thanks for the purse info Dan
