Why is Canelo targeting Makabu when Briedis is probably the accepted Cruiserweight champion?

I regard Makabu as the weakest 200lb champ and doesn't have the power that the other three 200lb champs have, particularly Okolie and Briedis.

Canelo has form on this - instead of fighting Beterbiev at 175lbs he fought Kovalev who, at 36, was a long way past his best and a barely functioning alcoholic - he was going to nightclubs more than the gym.

Unfortunately with 4 major sanctioning bodies these days it's relatively easy, compared to the past, for a very good fighter like Canelo to hoover up alphabet titles at different weights - particularly if the weakest of the current champions is targeted.

The acknowledged World Cruiserweight Champion is Mairis Briedis, Makubu is another alphabet champion and a champ on paper only.

How's it going, Dan?

When are you and your peers (boxing media) going to label Canelo what he is? He thinks winning belts from low-B level fighters when he is a high-A level fighter means something. Fighting the best opponents available has more weight than him winning belts against opponents who have no chance to beat him. He knows that but is constantly comforted by the fact that the media will applaud his empty accomplishments and not criticize him for avoiding fighters on or near his level. The only fights anyone wants to see with him are against Beterbiev and Bivol at 175 as well as against Andrade or Benevidez at 168. A third fight with Golovkin is a waste of time because Gennady has clearly lost a step or two. No one as good as Alvarez that has so many high level opponent options should have gone this long without fighting a 50-50 fight (one where he isn't the clear favorite).

I know he's a huge draw with Mexican Americans and puts a lot of money in people's pockets when he comes to town but he's not above being criticized. You guys need to say something. The fans aren't fooled like he thinks they are. Everyone knows he's avoiding the best fighters. Say something!

Looks like he wants more alphabet titles with the least risk. Watch how all the super middleweights he beat thought off the ropes or had their back touching the rope, they had no power to get his respect. Perfect stylistic matchups for Canelo and Eddie knew this.

To me the light heavyweight and potential cruiserweight wins are not really titles.

Benavidez and Beterbiev add more to your status more than this next guy.

Boxing badly needs the UFC model!! imagine the fights at Lightweight, Welterweight and Heavyweight.

Dan do you think this ever could happen - a UFC model in boxing - i can't see it with the many networks and promotors.

Canelo wants a CRUISERWEIGHT title!!?? That is a breathtakingly audacious move. Damn! Legacy, I guess.

So Canelo returns DAZN for a Big Fight in Guadalajara? Benavidez fights Dog Dirrell for interim Title? Maybe Canelo sidestepping them, finally forces some of these guys to make some real fights. GGG (Munguía), Jermall (Andrade), Bivol (Zurdo), etc. Interesting.

Dan….tell me Canelo isn’t trying to set up an eventual fight with Usyk at Heavyweight? Using Makabu as a stepping stone?
