Plus a ton of other random boxing thoughts: Best option if AJ wins; Tank-Ryan PPV price and DAZN increase; Haney-Loma anticipation; best BAD fights; Ramirez's Prograis propaganda; enough of Benn
Preach! Great newsletter and I'll say I agree with 100% of everything written! Felt like I wrote it myself, if, ya know, I was a good writer, and all.
Fury disgusts me on quite a few levels, and the sport suffers from him and those like him that arrogantly demand the impossible and price themselves out of the best fights. He's a schmuk.
One further note on your Jose Ramirez piece; not only is everything you said about his ducking spot on, but somehow even after that the Commey fight was a WBC eliminator!!! The WBC rewarding Ramirez is lunacy, but even absent that, what comes of him being closer to mandatory status? We get to do that bullshit "negotiation" again? C'mon
The most distasteful thing I find about Benn is that he WPC have somehow found justification to give him a No. 7 rating. His last fight was against Chris van Heerden, one year ago, a fighter that doesn't make the top 30 in the division. In the past year he has had an aborted fight against Chris Eubank and has failed two drug tests. He does seem to have benefited from all this adverse publicity.
The DAZN price increase makes it even worse value compared to the Dan Rafael Substack! Great piece Dan, Reading your writing has helped me get back into boxing.
Totally agree with Dan's comments about DAZN's terrible price increase. And- even if you are a subscriber, they still charge you for their PPVs, only slightly less than non-subscribers. Either PPVs should be free for DAZN subscribers or you should get a big discount.
GET ‘EM DAN! This is another outstanding piece. The DAZN pricing is ludicrous and a slap in the face to all subscribers (like me) who have been with them from the beginning. I wasn’t aware the price for Garcia-Tank had increased, but I’m not surprised. It’s infuriating, but that’s the life of a boxing fan.
dazn is still a good deal yes 100 to225 is outrages but i will pay it and espn plus. for i refuse to buy anymore pay per views i will not pay those insane prices for 1 set of fights. at least dazn and espn is almost weekly
Usyk wanting a reverse split 70/30 if he wins the first fight is absolutely fair. And credit to Usyk for humbling himself initially. But if Usyk's team is honest with themselves and the public. There's no way ever Tyson Fury fights anyone or anytime, for thirty percent of a fight purse. Fury will retire before ever accepting that. Hopefully cooler heads prevail and we get this mega fight eventually. Regardless of purse splits.
You're likely right, but if you lose and your consolation prize is another guaranteed mega payday of probably $20-30million (a rematch is likely worth something in the $70-100million range if the first one is at all competitive), then that's a you problem. But as we know, common sense doesn't live anywhere near wherever Tyson Fury goes.
