'Latino Night' breakdown, future plans for many of the company's fighters, Vergil Ortiz-Jaron Ennis talks, Ryan Garcia exhibition, more
A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. There may not have been a major fight card this past weekend but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a big show for you! We have two interviews. First up is my in-depth conversation with Golden Boy president Eric Gomez, who weighed in with his thoughts on the company’s superb “Latino Night” card, outlined the plans for many of the fighters on the roster, and covered other topics. Then there is TJ’s discussion with British boxing writer David Payne on several other topics of interest.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
My interview with Gomez. We covered a ton: How it was different doing a show in Riyadh compared to promoting an event in the United States and “Latino Night” getting a bit swallowed up by the Jake Paul-Mike Tyson hoopla that took place the night before.
Then we covered the DAZN card fight by fight and discussed the future plans for each of the Golden Boy fighters on the show: Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez’s big win over Chris Billam-Smith to unify cruiserweight titles and plans for a three-belt unification fight with lineal/IBF champion Jai Opetaia; junior welterweight Arnold Barboza’s career-best win over former unified titlist Jose Ramirez and where each goes from here; lightweight contender William Zepeda’s tough decision over Tevin Farmer and the hand injury he suffered; Oscar Collazo’s sensational performance in knocking out Thammanoon Niyomtrong to unify strawweight titles; junior welterweight Oscar Duarte’s decision over Batyr Akhmedov in a fantastic battle.
I am in my 25th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and also support independent journalism.
Golden Boy’s sale of The Ring magazine to Saudi Arabia’s Turki Alalshikh and his thoughts on the deal.
His thoughts on Golden Boy fighter Ryan Garcia heading to Japan for an exhibition fight despite being under suspension in the United States for PED use.
The beginning of talks for a fight between WBC interim junior middleweight titlist Vergil Ortiz Jr. and IBF welterweight titlist Jaron “Boots” Ennis on Feb. 22.
Plans for lightweight up-and-comer Floyd Schofield.
Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya’s weekly “clap back Thursday” videos he posts on social media.
TJ’s conversation with Payne with a British perspective. They discussed Paul-Tyson and the fantastic co-feature of the Katie Taylor-Amanda Serrano rematch; what might be next for IBF heavyweight titlist Daniel Dubois; a look ahead to Saturday’s Matchroom Boxing main event on DAZN between rivals Sunny Edwards and Galal Yafai for the vacant WBC interim flyweight title
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
