A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
With New Years this week there were no fights to recap but we still had plenty to discuss! We previewed the first world title fight of the year coming on Wednesday, when Jai Opetaia defends the cruiserweight title at home in Australia. We also went over some news of the week and covered part 2 of the best of boxing in 2024, including round, trainer, manager, upset, prospect and story of the year. And to finish up we looked back on the anniversary of a significant heavyweight fight.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Preview of the Tasman Fighters/Matchroom Boxing card on DAZN on Wednesday from Australia, where Opetaia will defend the lineal/IBF cruiserweight title against David Nyika and heavyweight up-and-comer Justis Huni will face Shaun Potgieter in the co-feature.
Announcement that Devin Haney plans to return to the ring in March and has done something rare in boxing by signing up for a 24/7/365 VADA testing program.
The IBF ordering a rematch between Willibaldo Garcia and Mexican countryman Rene Calixto for the vacant junior bantamweight title after they fought to a draw for the belt on Dec. 21.
I am in my 26th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and support independent journalism.
PBC’s plans for a non-PPV Prime Video card on Feb. 15 with middleweight Elijah Garcia slated to fight Terrell Gausha and heavyweight prospect Dainier Pero also on the show.
Part 2 of our discussion of picks for more of the best in boxing in 2024, including round, trainer, manager, upset, biggest story and prospect.
Ringside memories on the 18th anniversary of when heavyweight Samuel Peter routed James Toney in their rematch, a WBC final eliminator that headlined on Showtime.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
We bring you the preview each Friday and the weekend recap each Monday. Let me know what you think of the podcast by leaving your comments.
