A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. There were two notable cards on Saturday, both on DAZN: Leigh Wood’s rally to stop Josh Warrington in the seventh round of an action fight to retain the WBA featherweight title in Sheffield, England and Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez’s decision over Joe Smith Jr. in a crowd-pleasing battle in a WBA cruiserweight title eliminator in Las Vegas. We recapped both. We also discussed various news items of the week and looked back on a pair of notable anniversaries.
Here’s what we discussed on this episode (in order):
Recap of Wood’s dramatic comeback knockout of Warrington in an exciting fight, including it probably being Wood’s final featherweight bout; Warrington’s excellent performance until the knockout; the stoppage; the prospect of a rematch; and Wood’s penchant for memorable bouts.
Recap of the absurd majority draw in the Terri Harper-Cecilia Braekhus fight for Harper’s WBA women’s junior middleweight title and the vacant WBO belt. It was a fight Harper appeared to clearly win in the eyes of all but two judges who found a way to score the terrible fight 95-95.
Recap of Zurdo’s highly entertaining decision over Smith as they both moved up to cruiserweight looking to rebound coming off losses in their last fight.
Discussion of the soon-to-be-announced David Benavidez-Demetrius Andrade Showtime PPV card on Nov. 25, including the site (Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas) and details on the likely undercard, which is expected to include the return of WBC middleweight titlist Jermall Charlo after more than two years out of the ring.
The site being set for Ryan Garcia’s ring return against Oscar Duarte on Dec. 2.
Top Rank’s announcement of a heavyweight fight between Efe Ajagba and Joe Goodall as the headliner of a Nov. 4 card on ESPN+.
Announcement of former junior featherweight titlist Isaac Dogboe taking on Nick Ball in a WBC featherweight eliminator on Nov 18 (ESPN+) in Manchester, England.
Ringside memories on the 18th anniversary of Jose Luis Castillo and Diego Corrales meeting in a rematch five months after their all-time legendary first battle the day after Castillo badly missed weight and all the controversy it caused.
Memories on the 15th anniversary of Vitali Klitschko’s exit from a nearly four-year retirement to lay a beat down on Samuel Peter to regain the WBC heavyweight title and the interesting way in which I watched the bout.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
We will be bringing you the weekend recap each Monday. Let me know what you think of the podcast by leaving your comments.
