Podcast: Tszyu shines, Prograis does not; Garcia, Golden Boy mess
Plus: Canelo, Benavidez updates; three anniversaries of memorable fights: De La Hoya-Mosley I, Taylor-Wright, Trinidad-Blocker
A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
There were two significant cards on Saturday: Tim Tszyu’s smashing first-round knockout of Carlos Ocampo to retain the WBO interim junior middleweight title on Showtime and Regis Prograis’ lackluster split decision win over Danielito Zorrilla to retain the WBC junior welterweight title on DAZN in a candidate for worst fight of the year. We covered both in detail. We also covered some key boxing news of the week and shared memories on the anniversaries of three fights involving the biggest stars of their time.
Here’s what we discussed on this episode (in order):
Why we taped the podcast earlier than usual on Father’s Day instead of me going to a play with my family at the nearby Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Recap of Tszyu’s explosive 77-second KO of Ocampo: How impressive was it, how good it has been for Tszyu to be active and early thoughts on the long overdue mandatory fight with undisputed champion Jermell Charlo that is supposed to take place this fall.
Recap of Sam Goodman’s entertaining split decision over Ra’eese Aleem in an IBF junior featherweight eliminator in the Tszyu-Ocampo co-feature.
Recap of the wretched and largely unwatchable Prograis-Zorrilla fight. I assure you our conversation about how much it stunk is highly entertaining, especially when breaking down the historically pathetic CompuBox stats from what was just a horrible and pathetic fight.
Golden Boy’s decision to file a lawsuit against Ryan Garcia and adviser/attorney Lupe Valencia to have its contract upheld. What’s it all about, what do the sides want and where does this damaged relationship go from here?
Discussion of an exciting super middleweight showdown between David Benavidez and David Morrell, which is on tap as the next fight for both men.
Badou Jack’s announcement that he has removed himself from consideration as Canelo Alvarez’s September opponent due to the weight demands being made by Alvarez and who Alvarez may wind up facing.
Ringside memories on the 23rd anniversary of one of the greatest fights I’ve ever covered, the first epic battle between Hall of Famer Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosley, who won close decision and the WBC welterweight title.
Ringside memories on the 17th anniversary of the excellent fight but disputed draw between then-unified middleweight champion Jermain Taylor and Hall of Famer Winky Wright.
Memories on the 30th anniversary of Felix Trinidad’s devastation of Maurice Blocker to win his first world title at welterweight on the way to a legendary Hall of Fame career.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
We will be bringing you the weekend recap each Monday. Let me know what you think of the podcast by leaving your comments.

Trinidad VS Blocker was somethin👍🏻 I tuned in to watch Terry Norris & gotva Treat
Dan, what would you say is the biggest problem in boxing? I would argue it’s top fighters avoiding fights with other top fighters
So now here you go saying “Tszyu shines, Prograis does not” after Tszyu fights a bum and Prograis fights a super-underrated top guy!
Help us out here, man. Call out Tszyu’s “win” as meaningless and give props to Prograis getting a decision over a guy who put on a counterpunching clinic
