There were two significant American cards on Saturday: Carlos Adames’ ninth-round stoppage of Julian “J-Rock” Williams to retain the WBC interim middleweight title in the PBC main event on Showtime and super middleweight Edgar Berlanga’s decision win over Jason Quigley in the main event of the Matchroom Boxing main event on DAZN. We covered both shows and there is also my interview with welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz ahead of his much-anticipated fight with WBA “regular” titlist Eimantas Stanionis on July 8, some new of the week and memories on the anniversary of two major fights.
Here’s what we discussed on this episode (in order):
Recap of Adames’ victory over Williams, including thoughts on the fight and the controversial stoppage.
We also went over the two other Showtime bouts, junior middleweight
Erickson Lubin’s fifth-round knockout of Luis Arias on the referee’s tremendously controversial count and IBF junior bantamweight titlist
Fernando Martinez’s 11th-round knockout of Jade Bornea in an entertaining fight.
Recap of Berlanga’s return to the ring after a year layoff for his first fight with Matchroom Boxing, including his inability to get the KO everybody expected and Quigley’s very good showing.
Heavyweight Joe Cusumano’s upset eight-round knockout of Adam Kownacki in an all-out slugfest that became extremely one-sided and probably ended Kownacki’s career.
My interview with Ortiz in which we covered various topics, including the fight with Stanionis being delayed twice, his health problems and what he expects in the fight.
Thoughts on the undercard bouts that were announced for the Errol Spence Jr.-Terence Crawford Showtime PPV event.
Ringside memories on the 18th anniversary of Floyd Mayweather’s one-sided destruction of fellow Hall of Famer Arturo Gatti to win the WBC junior welterweight title in his first pay-per-view main event on his way to becoming the all-time PPV king.
Memories on the 35th anniversary of when undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson blew away Michael Spinks in 91 seconds to also become the lineal champion in a massive fight that was the biggest money fight in boxing history at the time.
