Plus: Cobbs beats Broner; news of the week; 3 fight anniversaries
A note to Fight Freaks Unite readers: I created Fight Freaks Unite in January 2021 and eight months later it also became available for paid subscriptions for additional content — and as a way to help keep this newsletter going and for readers to support independent journalism. If you haven’t upgraded to a paid subscription please consider it. If you have already, I truly appreciate it! Also, consider a gift subscription for the Fight Freak in your life.
There were three cards over the weekend — two on Friday and one on Saturday — that we recapped and gave our thoughts on, including Blair Cobbs’ win over Adrien Broner and Xander Zayas’ rout of Patrick Teixeira. There is also news of the week, including the International Hall of Fame inductions that took place on Sunday, and we looked back in the anniversaries of three major fights.
Here is what’s on the show (in order):
Recap of welterweight Cobbs’ rout of the faded Broner, who got dropped, got a tooth knocked out and looked to have nothing left other than his heart. We also touched the co-feature of the Don King PPV card in which heavyweight Michael Hunter shut out of unwilling Cassius Chaney.
Recap of WBO strawweight titlist Oscar Collazo overcoming a near knockout in the second round to otherwise rout Geraldo Zapata in the Golden Boy main event of the Hall of Fame card.
Recap of Top Rank’s ESPN card in New York on the eve of the city’s annual Puerto Rican Day parade that saw junior middleweight Zayas rout former world titlist Teixeira in the main event and featherweight Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington shine in an eighth-round knockout of Brayan De Gracia.
I am in my 25th year of full-time boxing coverage. Take advantage of that experience by upgrading to a paid subscription for full access to all posts and comments — and also support independent journalism.
Ryan Garcia’s arrest on felony vandalism charges at a Los Angeles hotel and being taken to the hospital for mental evaluation.
The rescheduling of Mike Tyson-Jake Paul and Katie Taylor-Amanda Serrano II for Nov. 15.
The accusations of domestic violence against Deontay Wilder and the temporary restraining order granted to his fiancee.
Thoughts on the Hall of Fame induction ceremony and the speeches the inductees gave.
Memories on the 46th anniversary of when Larry Holmes outpointed Ken Norton to win the WBC heavyweight title in an all-time great fight that included the legendary 15th round.
Ringside memories on the 17th anniversary of when Miguel Cotto stopped Zab Judah in the 11th round to retain the WBA welterweight title at Madison Square Garden on Puerto Rican Parade eve in a great fight.
Ringside memories of what was Tyson’s final fight (before unretiring to fight Paul this fall) when he lost to journeyman Kevin McBride.
Please give it a listen! Also: rate, review, subscribe and enjoy!
